[Video] 2017 UNFPA State of World Population Report Press Conference

Posted on December, 7 2017 by Action Canada

Dr. Kanem’s visit is her first to Canada as the UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNFPA.

Canada and UNFPA have worked in partnership for 50 years within development and humanitarian contexts to address sexual and reproductive health and rights; women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health; and ending child, early and forced marriage.

In 2016, Canada was a top donor to UNFPA’s humanitarian operations in the Middle East, providing essential reproductive health needs to survivors of sexual and gender-based violence. While Canada and other donors continue to support greater access to sexual and reproductive health and rights, 89 million unintended pregnancies occur annually and the demand for family planning by women in the poorest 20 percent of households is not met given existing barriers.

UNFPA’s “State of World Population” entitled Worlds Apart: Reproductive Health and Rights in an Age of Inequality, demonstrates how ensuring reproductive health services for the poor, particularly women and girls, contributes to economic growth and health and rights for everyone.

Dr. Natalia Kanem, UNFPA Executive Director and UN Under-Secretary-General; Amy Baker, Director General of Health and Nutrition, Global Issues and Development, Global Affairs Canada; and Sandeep Prasad, Action Canada Sexual Health and Rights Executive Director discuss Canada’s relationship with the UNFPA and the actions required for a more equal world including access to sexual and reproductive health and rights information and services.
